Hi, I'm Phil.
I am a serial entrepreneur, based in #yeahthatgreenville. I am a proud almnus of The University of South Carolina, where I studied History, Music, & Philosophy as a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
And here's everything else worth knowing about me:
As the 3rd of 4 children, I was extremely active in all sports and showed a little promise as a musician, mostly during programs at church.
At 8, I was involved in a bad accident and within weeks, diagnosed with Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease by the doctors at Shriner's Hospital for Children. Over the next 5 years, I spent 500+ nights in the hospital, 4 plus months in traction, had 4 different casts (including 3 body casts for 3 months at a time), and 15+ surgeries & procedures. At 17, I was released from the amazing care of the Shriner's where I have an enormous debt of gratitude.
While I was forced to give up most sports, I never missed a baseball season until my Freshman year of college, where the demands and rigors of Collegiate Athletics proved too much for my handicapped legs.
But I was able to stay very active in music; composition, arrangements, playing 6 instruments, and singing - choir, madrigals, & barbershop quartet.
At 15, I started my first business and at 16, helped put on my very first sports tournament; the beginning of a career as an entreprenuer and a coach/sports director.
After graduating college, I volunteered coach at Northwood Little League for 4 years, instructing kids that went to the very first World Series in Northwood history. 4 years later, I would be coaching some of those same players as I took the Varsity Baseball position at Christ Church Episcopal.
In 2000, I helped form the Greenville County High School Baseball All Star Game and put on 5 baseball tournaments to benefit Coach Ron Lesley.
While I loved coaching high school baseball and had great success, my oldest child was just beginning his journey in sports; missing his practices and games was simply not an option. Add in our business had just acquired another company, and my hands were full.
So in 2001, I was back at NWLL, where I managed and served on the Board as the VP of Baseball until 2010. I also took over as the Treasurer, the Athletic Director, and the Tournament Organizer for the newly formed District 7 of SC and headed the committee that chose our players for the Big League World Series (which we won multiple times).
In 2003, my growing company was now producing award ceremonies for national championship sporting events all across the country, literally working in every major metropolitan area of the US and at such prestigious venues like Disney World & Disney Land.
In 2005, travel baseball was expanding rapidly in the upstate. As VP of Baseball, and with my experience travelling the country with various sporting events, I saw the direction baseball was headed and implemented new policies at NWLL to embrace rather than fight travelball.
Since then, NWLL has continued to be a terrific place for kids of all talent levels to play baseball, while also still producing tournament teams capable of competing against the very best in the country.
In 2007, my oldest daughter started playing travel soccer, soon to be followed by my youngest daughter. We travelled the country competing against some of the very best in the nation. All the while I was learning more and more of what parents liked and didn't like when it came to tournament weekends.
That same year, NWLL asked me to put on some baseball tournaments to benefit the league and to fulfill our obligations to Greenville County Rec in our deal to get Corey Burns Park built. Those events were successful and lead and helped fund our part of the concession stand built at Corey Burns.
In 2008, we decided to put on more tournaments and grow that part of our business. By 2014, we were hosting over 2000 teams a year in our baseball events, with teams coming from SC, NC, GA, VA, TN, NY, MA, and even Ontario, Canada.
In 2016, we developed the concept for Team Stores, whereby coaches/orgnaizations/businesses could setup online stores allowing their folks to order apparel or uniforms, fulfilling the need of centralizing all orders, collections, and distribution. We made the whole process much easier and managable. Thousands of stores later, we have proven ourselves to be one of the top providers for uniforms and apparel in the southeast US.
In 2017, my wife and I were invited guests of Congressman Trey Gowdy to the Trump Inauguration. It was a distinct honor and privilege to witness history and I am forever grateful to Congressman Gowdy for extending the invitation.
In 2019, my son, Alan, and I started a web app development company and are very excited about the very soon release of our new app!
In 2021, I agreed to take over as President of Blue Ridge Little League. While I do not live in the boundaries, I know the Blue Ridge community to be full of great people who love baseball and their kids - and that is a place with which I can be 100% vested.
When I am not working with one our companies or doing baseball, I play a lot of golf, I collect baseball cards, I watch historical documentaries, I listen to sermons, and I study astronomy and quantum physics.
I am happily married for 29 years (thx, Jackie) and have 3 amazing kids, who all graduated from South Carolina with honors.
